‘My fiancé earns four times more than me

A woman has admitted to feeling ‘vulnerable’ and ‘ripped off’ after her fiancé insisted they won’t be sharing finances when they are married – others have told her not to tie the knot

Saying ‘I do’ at the altar reflects much more than love and companionship – it symbolises true commitment in every form. That’s why most couples will make sure to have frank conversations about their philosophies in life before tying the knot, to find out if they are both on the same page with their values, morals and world-views.

One subject that can get rather tricky for couples is finances. While honesty is always the best policy when it comes to money, it’s one of the most common pressure points in a relationship as financial strains can wreak havoc on a couple’s sense of security. Equally, varied earnings can cause tension as you try to navigate how to split finances.

One woman has opened up about a new-found issue with her fiancé, as he’s adamant that the couple won’t share finances when they are married – a sore spot for the bride-to-be. She feels “ripped off” and “vulnerable” after the decision and is wondering how it will affect their future, especially when kids come into the picture.

Taking to Mumsnet to vent, she wrote: “I earn approximately £40k so I’m under no illusion that I’m a low earner however he is making a significantly higher salary (earns at least 4x my salary). I asked how our finances will be combined once married and he has said that it will be the same as it is now! We currently have completely separate finances however he does pay more for general expenses due to being a higher earner.”
