Liverpool are facing competition from Chelsea to sign Romeo Lavia after the Blues entered the race for the Southampton midfielder – after Jurgen Klopp’s side saw three bids rejected
Failing to qualify for the Champions League can prove costly – and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are paying the price for not finishing inside the top four.
The Reds sat in fifth at the end of another gruelling Premier League campaign in May, meaning they will play in the Europa League in 2023/24. It is the first time Liverpool have not qualified for Europe’s elite club competition since 2016 – after they finished eighth in Klopp’s first season in charge.
And Klopp is feeling the effects of a disappointing top-flight campaign with Liverpool unable to splash the cash as freely as they may have wanted. The Reds have spent just shy of £100m this summer – less than seven Premier League clubs including Arsenal and Manchester United.
Now, Liverpool are facing a battle to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton after Chelsea lodged a £48m bid for the Belgium international on Wednesday. The Reds are having to be more astute in the transfer market and are currently not willing to match Saints’ £50m valuation of Lavia, having most recently seen a third offer of £46m rebuffed.
