The bottlenose and common dolphins feed off fish shoals swimming near the seaside town's shores. This isn't the first time a dolphin has died off the shores of our coast. Two dolphins died from bird flu in British waters for the first time in February 2023. The mammals were found in two separate locations, on beaches in Devon and Pembrokeshire. At least one of them was confirmed to have had the strain H5N1, a highly infectious variant of avian influenza which has caused millions of bird deaths across the globe over the last two years. A baby dolphin has died on a beach after it got caught in the tide as tourists were forced to watch on in horror.
People were forced to stand by after a failed rescue attempt at St Ives harbour in Cornwall yesterday.
It is thought the young bottlenosed dolphin lost its pod and became trapped over a sandbank.
