Perez is miles behind team-mate Max Verstappen in the standings, but is still in second place as Red Bull hope to complete a one-two championship finish for the first time ever
Helmut Marko has rubbished rumours that Sergio Perez is in line for a salary cut.
The Mexican’s current contract runs until the end of next season. But there has been significant speculation over his future, particularly during an awful run of qualifying form. Failing to reach Q3 at five races in a row, he was leaving himself too much to do in the Grands Prix themselves.
And that allowed team-mate Max Verstappen to create a huge gulf between them in the drivers’ standings. Perez remains the closest challenger to the Dutchman. But the gap now stands at 125 points and may increase even further in the second half of this season.
The points difference between them has sparked one of F1 silly season’s most inventive rumours. According to some outlets, the Mexican might be due a pay cut due to a clause in his contract which allegedly penalises him if he slips too far behind Verstappen.
