A New York City beach has been temporarily closed following a rare shark attack that left a 50-year-old woman critically injured. The incident at Rockaway Beach occurred on Monday evening when a woman was swimming in the waters near Beach 59th Street when she was suddenly bitten by a shark.
Lifeguards on duty rescued the victim from the water and administered first aid before she was transported to a local hospital. As of Tuesday morning, the woman remains in critical but stable condition, having sustained a deep leg wound from the shark’s bite.
The incident marks the first confirmed shark bite on Rockaway Beach in recent memory, the parks department said.
