De Niro’s grandson died from ‘toxic’ mix of drugs including fentanyl

Leandro De Niro Rodriguez, the 19-year-old grandson of Robert De Niro, died from a “toxic” combination of drugs that included fentanyl and cocaine, a New York City medical examiner has said.

Rodriguez was found dead inside a Manhattan apartment on July 2, leaving his Oscar-winning grandfather “deeply distressed”.

Drena De Niro, the teenager’s mother, later said her son had been sold pills laced with fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid that is fuelling America’s overdose epidemic.

A 20-year-old woman is facing federal narcotics charges in relation to the case. Now, a New York City medical examiner has ruled that Rodriguez’s manner of death was accidental.
