The best (and worst) PM holiday snaps – and why they matter

As the first pictures of Rishi Sunak in California emerge, we chart the mixed successes of politicians being photographed on holiday

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been photographed enjoying his California getaway with his family, the latest instalment in a long tradition of British prime ministers being snapped on their holidays.

The Prime Minister and his wife Akshata Murty posed with their daughters Anoushka and Krishna on Santa Monica pier during their family holiday to California.

This is the Sunaks’ first family holiday in four years. Although it is not their first attempt. They went on a family holiday to Spain in September 2022, but had to fly home after just 15 hours following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The prime ministerial holiday is a fine art, and something of a Great British tradition. Typically, Number 10 allows for a photographer to join for the very early stages of the trip, on the strict understanding that they will then be left to “enjoy themselves” afterwards. A process which most, but not all, PMs in recent decades have agreed to.
