Winging it when doing the laundry can not only be damaging to the clothes being washed but to the washing machine too. Thankfully, Andrea Pesce, appliance expert at  Domestic & General , has shared five common ways households may be causing damage that is ‘detrimental’ to their washing machine. She said: ‘Doing some very simple checks and following instructions can help reduce the damage to your washing machine.’ Leaving metal objects such as coins, keys, and screws could ‘damage the inner drum’ of a washing machine. Other items such as chewing gum and tissues can ‘clog your washer drain’. Leaving wet clothes in the washing machine  Leaving wet clothing in the washing machine for a prolonged period of time can ’cause mould’ to develop in the machine.  Andrea said: ‘This will lead to a smelly washing machine and also means your clothes won’t be cleaned properly.’ To stop this from happening, and avoid the need to replace the machine, make sure to empty out freshly washed clothes as soon as the cycle has ended. The expert recommended that it’s best to fill the drum to around 80 percent. 4. Using the machine more often than needed  How often, and how hard, households run their washing machine will determine their lifespan.  Stick to only full loads when washing clothes (Image: Getty) Looking for a new home, or just fancy a look? Not reading the instructions When purchasing a new appliance, including a washing machine, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the care instructions that come with it. This will allow households to know what detergent to use and any other important information about looking after the machine.
