 A woman has been left with a leg injury following a shark attack at a beach in New York City. Police were called to Rockaway beach, in the Queens borough of the city, on Monday evening at 5.52pm. The 50-year-old woman is in a stable but serious condition at Jamaica Hospital, with a 'major injury' which is non-life threatening. She had a large part of her leg missing when she was rescued from the water by lifeguards. Beachgoers were ordered out of the water following the attack as police helicopters searched from above. Police applied a tourniquet to the victim before she was rushed to hospital, according to the crime reporting app Citizen. The New York City Parks and Recreation Department, which oversees the city's beaches, said: 'We hope for a full recovery for this swimmer. 'Though this was a frightening event, we want to remind New Yorkers that shark bites in Rockaway are extremely rare. The authority confirmed it was the first shark attack at Rockaway Beach in recent memory. Helicopters have so far been unable to locate any sharks in the water. NYPD's Technical Assistance Response Unit (TARU) has been flying a drone over the beach as part of the investigation. The department and the FDNY plan to deploy the gadgets on the coastline today to continue the search, the New York Post reports.
