Piers Morgan did not pull his punches when addressing ‘activist’ Megan Rapinoe and the USWNT’s World Cup exit amid their decision to snub the national anthem
Piers Morgan has slammed Megan Rapinoe and the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) as “unpatriotic” after they crashed out of the Women’s World Cup. The current holders exited at the Round of 16 stage for the first time in their history with a 5-4 penalty shootout loss to Sweden.
The 38-year-old Rapinoe played her last international game for her country and missed a penalty that would have sent the USWNT through to the next round. The team itself have been heavily criticised for a number of years over their activism, in particular during the national anthem, with protests transforming from kneeling to standing silent.
After the game, Rapinoe was asked about the standout moment of her career and it was the activism that trumped the two World Cups, and the many other accolades that she achieved on a football pitch.
“It was peak Rapinoe: Supremely arrogant, annoyingly self-aggrandizing, and all about the money,” Morgan blasted in his New York Post piece.
