It was by pure chance that Black's reign of terror finally ended in 1990, when he was caught red-handed with a six-year-old girl hooded, bound and stuffed in a sleeping bag in his van in the Scottish village of Stow. Black had sexually assaulted her moments earlier. The victim's father, who was a policeman, recognised a similarity between the man in custody and another cold case - that of Caroline Hogg. He noticed that Black resembled a sketch artist's rendering of the suspect of her murder. It was this connection that made police consider him for multiple deaths and three separate crimes were eventually traced back to Black, each baring his trademark method - kidnapping, assaulting and murdering a child alone in the street, before discarding their bodies hundreds of miles away. The killer was able to evade justice for over 20 years as his job as a driver enabled him to crisscross police boundaries and stay one step ahead of authorities.
