Robin van Persie led Manchester United to Premier League glory in his first season with the club, and former United coach Rene Meulensteen has shed more light on the season
Football players choose their shirt number for all sorts of reasons.
For some it is superstition or the number of their boyhood hero. For others it is the number they have worn since school or simply the only number that was left.
In his first six seasons at Arsenal, Robin van Persie had worn No.11 before switching to No.10 for his final two campaigns. But his three seasons at Old Trafford saw him wear a number he never donned at any other club and Rene Meulensteen came up with the idea for why it was perfect for his fellow Dutchman, as he explains in his book.
“Robin fit into our group easily,” Meulensteen writes. “He was a top professional. There was no arrogance about him. He was a bit quiet at the beginning, but he seemed to love the intensity of our sessions from the start.
