Keira Walsh returns in massive boost for England’s World Cup hopes

Key midfielder set to face Nigeria in round of 16 after recovering from injury she feared had ended her tournament

Keira Walsh is set to start England’s first knockout game of the World Cup against Nigeria just 10 days after fearing she would be out for months with a serious knee injury.

Telegraph Sport understands that manager Sarina Wiegman has pencilled the Barcelona star’s name into the starting XI for the round-of-16 game on Monday after she was able to take part in two full training sessions over the weekend.

A final decision will be made in the morning, when staff assess whether there has been any setback in her recovery from the injury she feared had ended her tournament.

Manchester United’s Katie Zelem, who came into the side against China, while Walsh recovered, is on standby in case there is a problem.
