The Israeli military has begun using music therapy to treat soldiers suffering from PTSD as part of a landmark reform to the way it supports veterans.
The urgent need for the reform, which is still making its way through Parliament, was made clear this week when an Israeli army veteran died after setting himself on fire in a desperate cry for help.
Bar Kalaf, 33, set himself alight at his home last Tuesday after the defence ministry denied his application to be recognised as suffering from PTSD.
Among the mourners at his funeral was Itzik Saidyan, a fellow IDF veteran who also set himself on fire in 2021 – an act that spurred the defence ministry into action on PTSD.
