‘A close friend has stolen my chosen baby name and I feel so hurt’

I am supposed to visit her and the baby soon but I’m not sure I can

I’m eight months pregnant with my first child and one of my close friends has just stolen my baby name. I am absolutely devastated – I have always said that I was going to call a daughter Sylvia, but she just sent a text welcoming her Sylvia into the world. I am supposed to visit her and the baby, but I am not sure I can bring myself to. I feel so hurt. What should I do?

– Devastated

Oh, the pressure of a name. There it is on a piece of paper, ready to be brought to life; expected to encapsulate everything you feel towards your unborn child.

You are placing all the hopes and dreams that you have for this child – who they will be, what place they might occupy in the world – on this name’s shoulders.
