‘I’m a single mum of six with skin cancer

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT – Skin cancer survivor mum Deirdre Bonass, 56, is demanding that suncream is made more affordable and has bravely shared images of her treatment

A mum-of-six who is battling skin cancer has said that suncream should be made much more affordable as she shared images of her treatment journey.

Deirdre Bonass, 56, from Co Wexford in the Republic of Ireland, contracted the disease through sun exposure. She is currently in recovery from treatment for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) skin cancer, and is encouraging anyone heading on holidays or spending time in sun at home to take precautions.

Treatment for this form of skin cancer involves temporary changes to affected areas of the skin, including dryness, irritation and blisters, which can last for several weeks. She underwent a four-week application of Efudex Chemotherapy Cream following her diagnosis, and has bravely shared images of the effects it had on her skin.

Speaking about her experience and the changes to her skin, Deirdre told the Irish Mirror: “The doctor gave me a leaflet showing the stages of the treatment and the impact it will have on my skin – I showed this to family and friends so that they would also be prepared, but nothing could really prepare us for how bad it would get.
