BBC is right to be ageist, says Jeremy Vine

The 58-year-old, speaking amid the departure of a group of senior presenters, says he would ‘be cool’ if asked to leave his role

The BBC is right to be ageist towards older presenters, Jeremy Vine has said.

The 58-year-old said BBC veterans “have to accept” being replaced by new talent, but that they cannot claim it is unfair because they have “done it for so long”.

Vine, who has hosted his BBC Radio 2 lunchtime programme since taking over from Sir Jimmy Young in 2003, said that he would “be cool” with being asked to leave his role.

His comments come amid an exodus of senior BBC faces who have been replaced by younger presenters, including Ken Bruce, Vanessa Feltz and Steve Wright.
