EFL confirm rule change just hours before Championship season kicks off

The English Football League have confirmed that clubs will be able to show additional time via any stadium clocks or scoreboards following a number of rules changes

The EFL have confirmed that club’s will now be permitted to show the exact amount of additional time at the end of each half from the 2023/24 campaign.

The Premier League announced earlier this week that a number of changes to the rules and regulations of the game were being implemented ahead of the new season, including an overhaul on timekeeping, time-wasting and harsher punishments for misbehaviour on the touchline.

The decision to clampdown on timekeeping follows on from the 2022 World Cup, where match officials were often dishing out huge amounts of added time after keeping track of all delays rather than the obligatory 30 seconds for goal celebrations and substitutions.

The EFL are set to adopt a similar approach this season – and they confirmed that clubs would be permitted to leave any stadium clocks or scoreboards running to show how much additional time is left to play – just hours before Friday night’s Championship curtain-raiser between Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton.
