Spain’s sunbed war turns violent as two Brits attack scared family

Police attended the incident at a hotel after two holidaymakers are alleged to have clashed with the family at the pool on the Canary Island of Fuerteventura. The victims reported to officers that a 53-year-old mother of two daughters was tipped out of her sunbed by two Brits who said she had poached their spot. The events took place on Monday around lunchtime, it’s reported. According to a Spanish man, his wife and his two daughters, 18 and 22, were attacked at the pool while he took a nap. His wife, who “doesn’t know any English”, sat on an empty sun lounger and suddenly two British men, in their 60s and 30s, “started insulting her” and claimed she was sitting on their sunbed, Canary newspaper Diario de Avisos reports . He told Diario de Avios his wife got scared and didn’t understand what was happening, neither did her daughters who were allegedly pushed. He said: “I went down and two seconds later the Civil Guard arrived, which separated everyone.” Other hotel guests who were in the pool at the time are said to have immediately criticised the violent attitude of the two men. Canary newspaper Diario de Avisos says Civil Guard officers attended the un-named hotel to calm the situation down and to split the various parties up, with the Spanish family reportedly to have said they “were afraid”. Battles over sunbeds have heated up this summer (Image: Getty ) Police took details of all parties involved and the Spanish family said they refused to stay in the hotel as they were scared and asked to be moved to a different hotel instead. It’s understood they will be filing an official complaint when they return to their home in Albacete on the Spanish mainland. The mother, they say, has suffered ankle and back pain after the incident. Sunbed wars have been in the news over the last few weeks with reports of tourists claiming their spots very early in the morning or even last thing at night, “reserving” them with towels and leaving them empty for hours. Videos emerged last month showing tourists up at the crack of dawn to reserve sun loungers on the Canary Islands. Elsewhere huge queues were pictured showing holidaymakers waiting at hotels for their spot by the pool.
