William Shatner’s hologram joins a remote conference in Sydney

As Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, William Shatner would ask his chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott to “beam us up,” his prompt to leave a far-flung planet.

That famous phrase could echo around offices everywhere, if a Los Angeles-based technology company has its way.

Proto has developed what it describes as “the world’s first and only holographic communications platform” and it used 92-year-old Shatner to demonstrate the new technology.

The veteran actor was beamed into an advertising conference in Sydney this week while being safely ensconced in a studio in California.

His lifelike image, bearing a striking resemblance to a giant action figure, appeared in a box and addressed the audience in Australia.
