Inside the Tory battle to build more homes – without upsetting Nimby voters

Rishi Sunak faces a race against time to find solutions to Britain’s housing crisis

The Conservative Government is short of Generation Rent’s vote – the polls lay this bare – and many think it is unlikely that they will have it before the next general election.

Consecutive Tory governments have come up against the same conundrum: how can we build more houses for younger generations when older voters don’t want them built anywhere near them?

It has led countless Tory politicians to resist systemic change to the UK’s planning system. In an effort to placate the home-owning half of the electorate, the Government has left local councils with powers to turn down development plans as and when they see fit.

Its inaction has presented an opportunity for Labour. In recent months, the opposition party’s leader Keir Starmer has reeled off a series of “Tory-beating” housing policies.
