A man was forced to tread water for five hours before being rescued from the sea after he was swept away by currents.
On Monday morning, a 63-year-old man named Dan Ho was swimming off Long Island when he got swept out to sea by strong currents. He managed to tread water for five hours without any flotation devices and improvised a makeshift flag using a broken fishing rod and his shirt to attract rescuers.
Around 10.30am, he was spotted by two men on a motorboat, Jim Hohorst and Michael Ross, who pulled him out of the water onto their vessel. They alerted emergency responders, and the Suffolk County Police Department’s marine unit came to meet the civilian boat.
Ho was transferred to their ship, where he was treated for hypothermia. He was later taken to the US Coast Guard Station on Fire Island and then to Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip for further treatment. Despite exhaustion, he remained conscious and alert throughout the ordeal.
