 The family of Captain Sir Tom Moore has defended an unauthorised home spa which council officials have ordered be torn down. The army veteran, nicknamed Captain Tom, raised tens of millions of pounds for the NHS by walking 100 laps in his garden during the coronavirus pandemic. He walked 82 steps each time along a brick patio beside his garden in Marston Moretaine, a village in Bedfordshire. But Sir Tom's daughter, Hannah Ingram-Moore, and her husband Colin have come under fire for using her late father's name to build a spa pool at their home. They told planners they wanted to build an office for the Captain Tom Foundation in 2021. Planners granted them permission but an 'unauthorised' 50ft by 20ft pool house equipped with changing rooms, toilets and showers on the grounds of the £1,200,000 home was constructed instead. The couple initially applied to Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) asking for a single-storey structure to be built on the home's tennis court. The 'Captain Tom Foundation Building', as it was then called, would be 'for use by occupiers… and Captain Tom Foundation', filings said. After the local authority gave the plans a green light, the couple lodged reworked plans in February 2022 for a larger C-shaped building containing a spa pool. In supporting documents, the block was described as 'a new building for use by the occupiers' and was now referred to as 'The Captain Tom Building'.
