 A man in Tennessee was shot by police after trying and failing to break through into a Jewish school, then firing shots outside the building. Police in Memphis rushed to the Margolin Hebrew Academy around 12.30pm on Monday after receiving reports of a man armed with a handgun outside the school. Margolin is an Orthodox Jewish yeshiva that serves students from kindergarten to grade 8. Its campus also houses the Feinstone Yeshiva of the South, which serves high school aged students. The gunman fired his weapon outside the school, but no injuries were reported. He fled moments later in a maroon pickup truck. An alert was sent out for the suspect's pickup truck, which was quickly located in a nearby residential neighborhood. 'Officers conducted a traffic stop, at which time the driver exited his vehicle armed with a handgun,' the Memphis Police Department said. 'An MPD officer fired his duty weapon, striking the suspect.' 'I am proud of the vigilant and quick response of MPD officers who mitigated a potential mass shooting situation today,' Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn 'CJ' Davis said. He was hospitalized at Regional One Health in critical condition. Congressman Steve Cohen, who represents Memphis in the US House of Representatives, later confirmed that the shooter is Jewish and was a former student at Margolin. 'I am pleased the academy had effective security and that the police acted quickly to protect students,' Cohen said in a press release.
