World Cup co-hosts New Zealand crash out of tournament as Norway make dramatic group comeback

New Zealand become the first of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-hosts to crash out of the tournament following a toothless draw against Switzerland on Sunday

World Cup co-hosts New Zealand have crashed out of the tournament at the group stages following a toothless 0-0 draw against Switzerland on Sunday.

The Football Ferns began their World Cup campaign with a historic 1-0 win over Norway in their opening game. However, a defeat to the Philippines on matchday two and a lackluster goalless draw in their final game spelled the end of a disappointing run.

Jitka Klimkova’s side rarely tested Switzerland, earning their first attempt on target in the 73rd minute. It was a rather subdued affair for a game that had so much on the line.

A draw could’ve been enough for New Zealand, but they were reliant on the other group A game between Norway and the Philippines going their way. That hope quickly diminished as a quick-fire double in the first half from Sophie Haug put Norway comfortably in front and well on their way to reaching the knockout stages.
