Spooky ‘skeleton’ hotel in the middle of a forest abandoned after the owners went bankrupt

The hotel has been dubbed ‘Skeleton Hotel’ A hotel in Brazil has been given the nickname ‘Skeleton Hotel’ after being left abandoned in the forest when the owners went bankrupt. The Gávea Tourist Hotel was designed in the 1950s and was due to open around that time. But the construction company responsible for the project went bankrupt meaning the works were never completed. Located in the Tijuca Forest in Rio de Janeiro, the hotel was dubbed ‘Skeleton Hotel’ with the large green forest hiding the carcass of what was supposed to be a luxury hotel. Inside, 270 steps lead up 16 floors of the structure which was built in 1953. In 2011, a new administration took over the area and has plans to reopen it under a new name. Speaking to G1, Marcos Cumagai, a board member of the new administrator Gávea Residence and Corporations, said: “In 2011, when we took over, we had a few doubts about this development that was abandoned. We found people living here, some car wrecks. All this was resolved, and the land was cleaned up.” Tourists have started visiting the abandoned hotel who want to take in the view. Despite never being completed, the space has been used in the past. In 1965, the hotel hosted a large New Year’s Eve party and a nightclub called Sky Terrace operated there. “It seems to me that, during the 70s or 80s, there was a nightclub here. They had some parties on the rooftop. It happened for around a year, and then it was definitively closed,” Mr Cumagai said. The hotel is hidden amongst a forest Trending
