Ukraine gets revenge as Kyiv wipes out top Russian commander known for gruesome torture

Ukraine: Aftermath of Russian missile attacks on Odesa Ukraine’s counter-offensive won another victory this week after killing a hated Russian commander. Artur Bogachenko, who was in charge of Russia’s gruesome ‘Ghost’ Brigade, was killed in action, according to the Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Anatoly Shtefan. News of Bogachenko’s death was later confirmed by Russian military Telegram channels. The commander was killed during clashes near Klishchiivka, a settlement south of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Bogachenko led the Prizrak Brigade (meaning ‘Ghost Brigade’) of the Russian Armed Forces. Referencing the previous commanders of the brigade, Colonel Shtefan wrote on Telegram: “The commander of the Ghost Battalion, Artur Bogachenko, was successfully demobilized. He went to visit Mozgovoy and Markov.” The previous commanders of the Ghost Brigade, Alexei Mozgovoy and Alexei Markov, died in 2015 and 2020. According to Amnesty International, the unit is known for its brutal treatment and torture of prisoners of war. One soldier who survived the torture reported that he and his fellow prisoners had suffered daily beatings, near-starvation, as well as the stabbing and shooting of body parts. Showcasing his confidence in his military, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky today travelled close to where Bogachenko was killed. President Zelensky visited Ukrainian troops in ‘advanced positions’ near the eastern Bakhmut frontline today. He praised Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, tweeting: ‘The performance of tasks for the sake of Ukraine by you, guys, is truly heroic.” Ukrainian authorities have said Kyiv’s troops are gradually moving forward near Bakhmut, which Russian forces seized in May.
