‘I lost my unborn baby after catching a rare infection from a trip to the supermarket’

Danielle Livesey lost her son Ethan 18 weeks into her pregnancy after she picked up a rare foodborne infection that can cause serious problems if you’re pregnant

A woman suffered a miscarriage at 18 weeks due to a rare infection she may have picked up from a trip to the supermarket.

In the UK, it is estimated that one in four pregnancies end in loss during pregnancy or in birth. It is also estimated that there are around 250,000 miscarriages in the UK every year and in 2021, there were 2,866 stillbirths. Despite these statistics, miscarriages remains a subject that many are hesitant to speak about.

Grandmother Jennifer Livesey wants to change this perception. Almost a year ago, on August 8 2022, her daughter Danielle Livesey lost her son Ethan at 18 weeks. Now mum and daughter feel compelled to share their experience in order to remind other women that there is no shame in talking about miscarriage and that it’s something people should do more often.

Jennifer said: “Nobody talks about miscarriage – nobody talks about it. I just wanted to get it out there, that it’s OK to have a miscarriage. There are facilities out there that will help you.”
