Russell called 911 as she drove home from work on July 13, claiming to have seen a diapered toddler on the side of the road. She hung up, then called her brother's girlfriend to recount the same made-up tale. During that conversation, she screamed, then disappeared for two days. The next time she was seen, it was with a cut lip after she showed up mysteriously at her parents' house. She told them she 'd been abducted by a man with orange hair, held hostage and then managed to escape. But the entire story, even her busted lip, were fake. There was no toddler, and there was no kidnapper. Derzis was fuming as he addressed reporters and the community alike in Friday's press conference. "Numerous law enforcement agencies, both local and federal, began working tirelessly not only to bring Carlee home to her family but to locate a kidnapper that we now know never existed," he said. "Many private citizens volunteered their time and energy into looking for a potential kidnapping victim that we now know was never in any danger." He accused Carlee of having "opened wounds for families who's loved ones really were victims of kidnapping."
