President Zelensky has hailed the Ukrainian army’s “very good results” in the battle to drive out Russia’s invading forces as officials in Washington said the main thrust of Ukraine’s counteroffensive was under way in the southeast of the country.
“Today our guys at the front had very good results,” Zelensky said, without giving details, in his nightly address to Ukrainians. Pentagon officials told The New York Times that thousands of Ukrainian reinforcements who had been trained and equipped by western countries had been deployed for the first time after being held in reserve.
The Russian defence ministry said that Ukraine had launched a “massive” attack near Orikhiv, a town in the Zaporizhzhia region that is about 65 miles north of the Sea of Azov. It
