Banks should have to sign up to a universal service obligation and offer every person an account

Allison and Liam discuss the push towards a cashless society and why the Coutts dossier on Nigel Farage could just be the start

“Banks are withdrawing from high streets, many bank branches are closing down. One and a half to 2 million people in the UK don’t currently have bank accounts, not because they’re politically exposed, because banks just don’t think that they’re worth it.”

On the latest Planet Normal podcast, which you can listen to using the audio player above, columnists Liam Halligan and Allison Pearson talk about the Nigel Farage NatWest scandal and how it’s a much wider problem.

Allison is concerned Coutts cancelling Nigel Farage because of his views is a dangerous precedent to set and it could happen to anyone.

“People have been warning about this Chinese style credit system. It’s easy to imagine a situation in which people are told we’re not going to be affording you access to that line of credit because you’ve expressed disbelief that the wildfires in Greece are linked to climate change. So it’s possible to see, isn’t it?”
