Met Office climate report bombshells as UK faces 40C heatwaves ‘every summer’

The Met Office said 2022 was the warmest year on record in the UK – and unless greenhouse gas emissions are controlled, last year could seem cool compared with what it will be in 2100

The UK’s climate is continuing to change as temperatures go up and 2022 was the warmest year on record in the country, the Met Office has said. The latest “State of the UK Climate” report, which was published today, found that recent decades have been warmer, wetter and sunnier than the 20th century.

Climate experts said last year’s extreme heat is an example of what the future could look like unless greenhouse gas emissions are controlled. Temperatures rising beyond 40C, repeated and intense heatwaves, grassfires, summer droughts, downpours and rising sea levels will increase in frequency and severity.

Despite the devastating wildfires in the UK amid 40C heat, 2022 could even seem like a cool year compared with what it will be in 2100 if current emissions levels are not lowered, the report said.
