In front of a huge crowd, army veteran and charity fundraiser Martin McConnell was hoping to put on a show and raise some money for good causes. But the dad in his 50s, sadly died when he came off his turbo charge Suzuki Hayabusa at Terminal Velocity, at Tibenham Airfield, in Norwich, on Sunday morning. Emergency services were called to the airfield around 11am, after he crashed trying to break the 200mph record. But he was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr McConnell served in the Royal Corps of Transport and in 2015 set up a support group for military veterans suffering from PTSD. Exforces PTSD raises funds for the families of ex-soldiers to go on holidays. He had also travelled across Europe to deliver aid to Ukraine, during Russia's brutal invasion. It isn't known how fast Mr McConnell was going at the time as he tried to break the runway's record of just under 200mph. Back in 2018, for his efforts fundraising over £33,000, and funding 25 holidays to Jersey, he was nominated for the Daily Mirror's Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year Award. His son Jamie took to social media to pay tribute to his dad. He said: "None of this seems real, but we all know the risks taken when competing in motorcycle racing. "Unfortunately, today is a day I never saw coming. We have lost my dad Martin McConnell in a high speed crash at Tibenham Airfield. "I am lost for words at the minute. I know for a fact he died smiling and doing what he loved. RIP dad, I will never forget you. The memories we have will live on forever in our hearts."
