Tech billionaire Elon Musk bought Twitter for a staggering $44 billion last year. (Image: GETTY) Elon Musk has begun a radical rebranding of Twitter to X which will see the iconic blue bird scrapped for the black letter. Musk announced his intention to rebrand early Sunday. By Monday, he tweeted that x.com now links to twitter.com adding the ‘interim X logo goes live later today’ with a photo of the company’s headquarters lit up with a giant X. Twitter’s official account photo now features the logo as does Musk’s. The tech billionaire’s bio simply reads x.com . Musk, during the shake-up, also created a Twitter poll asking users if the platform’s signature light blue color scheme should be changed to black – 74.8 percent of respondents said ‘yes’. He previously tweeted the website would bid ‘adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds’ before announcing the latest shakeup. Meta, one of the company’s main competitors which owns Instagram and Facebook, launched its app Threads earlier this month, increasing pressure on Twitter. Around 100 million users signed up for Threads in its first week. When Musk took over Twitter in October 2022 it had around 238 million active users. CEO Linda Yaccarino, appointed by Musk in June, praised the rebranding on the platform. She said: ‘It’s an exceptionally rare thing – in life or in business – that you get a second chance to make another big impression. ‘Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.’ Musk considers himself a ‘free speech absolutist’ and says he bought the platform to ensure users’ ability to speak freely on the social media website. However, his takeover led groups including the Anti-Defamation League, Free Press and GLAAD to pressure companies to pull advertising from the platform. They cited concerns following mass layoffs at the company and worried that cuts by Musk would make Twitter’s election-integrity policies unenforceable.
