 Theatregoers were left stunned after a man dressed in a gimp suit went to watch Shakespeare at The Globe in London. The audience was shocked after a man wore a blue latex suit to a matinee performance of The Comedy of Errors. After the performance on May 24, one woman wrote to the theatre to complain that she was 'shocked to see a man in a full latex gimp suit' and 'even more shocked that he was allowed to stay . . . despite what he was wearing'. The Globe duty manager wrote in an internal report obtained by The Sunday Telegraph: 'Patron wearing a latex jumpsuit, including full face mask, had a yard ticket. 'A few comments from staff, but [Front of House] erred on the side of caution and left the patron to enjoy the show. 'Our only worry was that the patron might've overheated!' 'Children were present at the show, but what they made of the man in a full fetish outfit was not recorded.' The complainant asked managers: 'Why was he allowed to stay in a venue that caters for the general public including children? 'Even if a child doesn't know what a latex suit is or the sexual connotations, it's still a very scary sight and puts parents in a very uncomfortable position when it comes to explaining to their children what is going on. 'I found the whole thing extremely inappropriate.' The theatre manager replied: 'As the outfit did not contain offensive or discriminatory slogans or wording, the decision was taken to permit the visitor to remain on site.' The theatregoer insisted that 'the very nature of the outfit was offensive'. 'It is sexual fetish-wear and sexual fetishes are not appropriate to act out in public,' she said. The manager replied that the theatre was assessing its policy around clothing 'and your feedback will form part of that discussion'.
