Officials closed a portion of the beach for the remainder of the day following the incident. On Saturday morning, July 22, Hilton Head director of public safety, Bob Bromage, said the man was 60 years old. It's not clear whether the man was a visitor at the popular family beach or a resident of the area. It was not clear on Saturday as to whether he had been released from hospital or was still receiving treatment for the "apparent bite wound." Mike DeMaria, Hilton Head's Beach Operations Manager, could not confirm whether the man had, in fact, been bitten by a shark. However, he did say he suffered from a "possible shark bite." Beachgoers were warned to be careful in the ocean around early morning and dusk as it's during these hours that wildlife activities are "usually greater". Last year, 2022, saw 57 reported unprovoked shark bites on humans worldwide, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File. Of those 57, 41 unprovoked bites took place in the United States. It comes just one week after a surfer was attacked by a shark in Florida, taking a chunk out of his food.
