On the day Britain’s first £1million footballer, Trevor Francis, died at 69, Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal submitted a world record £260m bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s France striker Kylian Mbappe, and PSG have accepted it.
According to the retail price index, something worth £1m in 1979 â the year Francis broke through the seven-figure barrier when he signed for Nottingham Forest â is worth around £4.2m today in equivalent purchasing power. No disrespect to Mbappe, who I regard as the world’s current best footballer, but he’s not worth 60 Trevor Francis clones.
And no disrespect to our gilded friends in the desert, but at 23 Mbappe is a bit young to be consigned to football’s pre-retirement bingo society.
