Tories reward their voters with new hospitals while sites in Labour areas neglected

Shotley Bridge Hospital, in a Tory seat and part of the nearby County Durham and Darlington NHS trust, will have a newbuild by 2028 – but hospitals in Labour have been neglected

The Tories are accused of rewarding their voters with new hospitals at the expense of Labour areas.

Nine of the 11 newbuild hospitals due to open by 2030 are in the constituencies of Tory MPs – while sites in Labour seats are left to crumble.

Last year, inspectors found leaking roofs, broken ceiling panels and freezing pipes at University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton-on-Tees.

Its boss said it was “not fit for purpose” but the site – in Labour MP Alex Cunningham’s patch – did not make the Government shortlist.
