Xavi’s words come back to haunt him as Barcelona pull out of friendly in USA

The former Spain midfield maestro may regret his words from back in 2015 as his Blaugrana team pulled out of the first date on its US tour due to an outbreak of illness in the camp

Barcelona have cancelled an exhibition match against Juventus after a spate of illness swept through Xavi Hernandez’s squad on the eve of their US tour.

The Blaugrana have travelled to America for a series of blockbuster friendlies against big-name opposition, with a date versus the three-time European champions having been slated for the trip’s opener. However, the Camp Nou outfit pulled out of the clash against Max Allegri’s team after several members of their squad were struck down by viral gastroenteritis.

In a statement released on the Spanish giants’ social media pages, the club explained the reasons behind the decision to step away from the match, which read: “FC Barcelona hereby informs that the game against Juventus FC, scheduled for today, July 22 at 7:30 PM at Levi’s Stadium, as part of the Soccer Champions Tour, has been cancelled. A significant part of the Blaugrana squad has a viral gastroenteritis.”

The match at Levi’s Stadium would have formed part of the Soccer Champions Tour but the La Liga champions were left in no position to fulfil the fixture. In a strange twist of fate, however, Barca’s head coach may now regret some comments he made some eight years ago where he simply deemed gastroenteritis to be nothing more than an “excuse”.
