UK holidaymakers are being told to flee to safe areas as the raging wildfires on the Greek island of Rhodes continue to spread, leaving thousands forced to evacuate
British holidaymakers have been ordered to evacuate areas on Rhodes as ferocious wildfires continue to sweep through the Greek island.
An urgent message from the UK Embassy in Athens on social media read: “If you are in Kiotari & Gennadi areas, evacuate now to Plymiri.”
The Rhodes wildfire was initially confined just to the island’s mountainous area, but began spreading on Saturday to the more heavily populated central eastern side amid heatwave conditions.Thousands have been forced to evacuate and several Brits are stranded as the blaze entered its fifth day of burning, with hundreds of firefighters battling to bring it under control.
Travel firm TUI earlier said flights to the island were “operating as normal” and confirmed they were provided assistance to those affected.
