The 1995 World Cup was an epoch-defining event both on and off the pitch as South Africa – the nation and the team – continued their journey out of the apartheid era while rugby hurtled towards the brave new world of professionalism.
For Iain Morrison, it was the end. The flanker’s body had long since begun to give up on him and virtually as soon as the tournament was over, his mind moved on as well. His last act in international rugby was scoring a try against Scotland for the Barbarians in a match to honour the victims of the Dunblane Massacre in August 1996, but for all intents and purposes the World Cup was his finish line.
