 The UK's third-tallest skyscraper has been approved by planners and work could begin as early as 2024. 55 Bishopsgate will be a 285m (935ft) glass tower 63 storeys high, close to the Gherkin, situated in the City of London. It is set to be one of the most recognisable landmarks on the capital's skyline, joining other skyscrapers like the Walkie Talkie and the Cheesegrater. Construction work on the £600 million project could begin as early as 2024, with a proposed completion date of 2029. The existing 20th century building at 55 Bishopsgate will be demolished to make way for the massive new skyscraper. The new building will offer office space for around 7,000 city workers. An outdoor viewing platform at rooftop level will be built to provide '360 degree views' across London as well as a free public viewing gallery at summit level. The ground floor will include a pop-up retail space, dedicated cultural space and a free 'sky garden' conservatory with capacity for 300 visitors. The plans will now be submitted to London Mayor Sadiq Khan who will decide whether to step in. Applicants for the skyscraper during the planning committee meeting said it was a 'unique' opportunity for the city. Chris Gascoigne, of planning consultants DP9, said: 'The proposals offer a thorough and wide-ranging public benefits package. 'This includes delivering over 100,000 square metres of office floor space, representing 14% of the city's office targets.
