 A heatmap has finally proven some of London's boroughs are hotter than others. The map, created by Friends of the Earth and TerraSulis, has shown areas with largest amount of green space are able to remain cooler. Central London boroughs, including the City of London and Tower Hamlets, were found to be the hottest as there were few ways to cool off. But neighbourhoods such as Camden and Westminster were able to benefit from being close to large green areas such as Primrose Hill and Hyde Park. Woolwich Common and Charlton Park are shown to be some of the captial's coolest areas, with the average temperature being 3.5 lower that London's hottest areas. Meanwhile areas with no trees can be up to 5C hotter than leafier areas, with places such as Elephant and Castle and Hackney experiencing more intense heat. It is the first time research into the cooling abilities of green spaces has been analysed, according to Friends of the Earth. Mike Childs, head of science, policy and research at Friends of the Earth, said: 'We know that extreme weather, including heatwaves, is becoming more frequent and severe due to the climate crisis. Areas with greener spaces are able to stay cooler in heat (Picture: Amer Ghazzal/Shutterstock) 'But not everyone is affected equally, with the most marginalised communities the hardest hit in the UK and overseas. 'Boosting tree numbers is such a clear win for our communities and our planet, not just because of their ability to cool urban areas, but because they capture planet-warming carbon too. 'This should be prioritised alongside a rapid programme of council-led, street-by-street insulation, which helps keep homes cool in the summer just as much as it keeps them warmer in winter.'
