Man having a ‘heart attack’ arrested after allegedly stabbing an EMT

Health worker stabbed in New York A man has been arrested in New York City after allegedly stabbing an EMT multiple times, according to officials. Rudy Garcia, 48, was picked up at 94th Street and Amsterdam just before 9pm after a call came in about cardiac arrest. Garcia then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the 25-year-old EMT several times in the legs and abdomen. Officials said she was treated at Mount Sinai West before she was transferred to Mount Sinai Morningside. She is expected to survive. The incident highlights a troubling trend in the Big Apple: attacks against EMTs and other first responders. A man allegedly stabbed an EMT who was trying to help him. Last September, Cpt. Allison Russo was stabbed outside her station in Queens. The FDNY paramedic died of her injuries. The FDNY says there have been 121 attacks on EMTs so far this year, according to a report by ABC7. In a statement, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East said: ‘The horrific stabbing of an EMT by her patient last night underscores the dangers faced by emergency medical workers every day. 1199SEIU is closely monitoring the situation and our members are praying for their colleague’s swift and full recovery. ‘Violence against healthcare workers is all too common, and New York must do all it can to ensure that these frontline heroes are able to do their jobs free from the threat of physical harm.’ New York City Mayor Eric Adams acknowledged the challenges facing first responders.
