The Arsenal star was born of Italian descent, after her Sicilian grandfather moved to England in the 1950s. He passed on his love for Manchester United to her. Russo grew up in Maidstone, Kent, alongside her brothers, Luca and Giorgio. It seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in Russo's family, with both her dad and brother having a passion for the sport and playing for teams in their younger years. Her police officer dad Mario reportedly played non-league football for the Met Police and was their all-time goal scorer. Mario told Our Game Mag in 2017 that he moved his daughter from the girls team to a boys team when he saw her potential, which prompted "strange looks" from other parents. Russo's brother Giorgio also played semi-professionally for Ramsgate in Kent. When she was around eight years old, Russo appeared as a mascot for then-Charlton Athletic captain, Casey Stoney, and walked her onto the pitch. Then a decade later, Stoney ironically signed her for Manchester United in 2020.
