A concerned mum has issued a warning to other parents after being the victim of an AI scam which saw her get a phone call which sounded like her daughter crying after 'being kidnapped'. Debbie Shelton Moore, from Georgia, received a call from who she thought was her daughter Lauren, with other male voices claiming she was bundled into the back of their car. Given it sounded just like her 22-year-old daughter, she was in a state of panic, having truly believed she had been kidnapped, she told 11Alive. Then the other voice on the phone asked for thousands of dollars in exchange for Lauren's safe return home. "My heart is beating and I'm shaking," she said when she recalled the moment she got the call. "I'm shaking thinking about it right now. It just sounded so much like her. It was 100 per cent believable. Enough to almost give me a heart attack from sheer panic. "The man had said, 'Your daughter's been kidnapped and we want $50,000.' Then they had her crying, like, 'Mum, mum' in the background. It was her voice and that's why I was totally freaking out. I [was] thinking she's in the back because he said, 'We have her in the back of the truck." "It was all just kind of a blur because all I was thinking was, 'How am I going to get my daughter? How in the world are we supposed to get him money?'" she added. Debbie's husband, who works in cybersecurity and overheard what was going on, FaceTimed Lauren, who told him she was safe and sound, which police confirmed after going over to check on her. Now Debbie hopes other families don't receive the same call, which came from a '678' number. Police said these scam calls are becoming a more common occurrence due to artificial intelligence.
