The shocking theft hit the headlines due to the sheer volume of chocolate stolen. The 200,000 chocolate eggs were recovered by police after the 32-year-old gave up on the M42 and was arrested. He was later charged with criminal damage and two counts of theft. Alongside the tens of thousands of kilograms of chocolate eggs, Pool, from Tingley, near Leeds, stole other chocolate varieties too. In a Twitter post at the time, West Mercia Police said: "The eggs-travagent theft took place on Saturday 11 February with the chocolate collection box thought to be worth around £40,000. "Shortly after the theft a vehicle, presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny, was stopped northbound on the M42 and a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft." In February, Pool admitted to three charges, but before sentencing the Crown Prosecution Service said he should only have faced one count of theft, the BBC reported. But in June, Pool entered three guilty pleas at Telford Magistrates' Court. He admitted theft, criminal damage to a lock at the trailer park - and driving without insurance. The court heard how Pool used a metal grinder to get access to the industrial unit before making off with the assorted chocolatey goods. Magistrates were told that Pool used a tractor unit, which had been stolen in October from the Yorkshire area, to tow the trailer away, Bracknell News reported.
