A 10-month-old baby has become the latest victim in a blistering heatwave hitting the US after being left in a car.
The baby girl was left in the car in a community outside Jacksonville, Florida, according to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies investigating the case believe the child was “inadvertently left” inside the car for an extended period of time.
Details on how long investigators believe the child was in the car, or who noticed she was missing, have not been released. According to a weather observation site near the town of Macclenny, the low temperature of the day was 22.7C, with an afternoon high of a scorching 37.2C.
The heat index that afternoon was estimated to be around 45C. Temperatures this high are potentially deadly for any age group exposed to the summer heat for prolonged periods.
