Algeria's Civil Protection unit confirmed that the death toll from the bus crash had left 34 dead with another 12 injured. A statement from the police said it happened in the village of Atoll in Tamanrasset state. They added that the crash lead to another bus and a car catching alight and going up in flames, without providing further details. Incredible images from the scene show a bus completely gutted by flames, lying on the roadside as a twisted, mangled wreck. The condition of the wounded is currently unknown. According to the Arabic Post, road accidents claim dozens of lives every week. For example, in the six days between July 9 and 15, there were 1,359 traffic accidents in the whole of Algeria. Forty-two people were killed and another 1,697 were left injured with varying levels of severity. Since May, officials reported 333 deaths and 12,717 injuries after a whopping 11,542 traffic accidents. As the numbers were announced last week, First Lieutenant Youssef Abdat said that most accidents were caused by "[high] speeed and dangerous manoeuvres." He added: "As well as negative behaviors of some, especially young people during wedding seasons, Which causes many accidents." Lieutenant Abdat added that motorcycle riders were also to blame in some measures, saying that many refuse to wear a helmet and ride dangerously on congested roads.
