There, he was floored to learn that he was actually having a heart attack. What Sharath, now 60, didn't know was that his South Asian heritage increased his risk by up to 50 percent. Recalling that terrifying day, he told The Mirror: "It was really scary because I couldn't control the car properly. "Luckily, I knew the hospital was close by so I was able to get there quickly. I think if it had gotten any worse, I would have had to wave down strangers and hope that one of them would stop to help me." Sharath stars in a new documentary hosted by ex-England cricketer and former Strictly Come Dancing champion, Mark Ramprakash. The 53-year-old sports champ explores the increased risk of heart attack and stroke to people of South Asian heritage after his own father experienced a stroke several years ago. Close to half of people in the UK are living with total cholesterol levels above national guidelines, increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease. Those who have had a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack or stroke, are at increased risk of having a further one, with nearly half suffering another on average 114 days later. The documentary shines a light on the impact of cardiovascular disease in the South Asian community, in which health outcomes are significantly poorer.
